Rugby Championship: South Africa withdraw from southern hemisphere event

World Cup winners South Africa have withdrawn from the Rugby Championship, leaving Argentina, Australia and New Zealand to contest the tournament.

Tournament organizers, SANZAAR, who had given South Africa an additional 48 hours to confirm their intentions, announced the anticipated decision on Friday.

South Africa cited player welfare concerns because of the delayed start to their domestic competition and uncertainty over government travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic for players in South Africa and in Europe.

Chiefs not popping the champagne yet

JOHANNESBURG – “It’s still early days.” That was the sober assessment of Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Shaun Bartlett on the talk that his team are title certainties.

After the naysayers predicted the team would have yet another disappointing term under the stewardship of Ernst Middendorp, Chiefs have defied the odds.

Cape Town named as 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens hosts

Cape Town has been named by World Rugby as host venue for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

The announcement was made in Tokyo on Tuesday after the World Rugby Council awarded the hosting rights for the premier tournament to South Africa at its Interim Meeting.

Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament jets into Cape Town

In September 2022 the eighth edition of the showcase event will take place in Cape Town in what will be the first time that Rugby World Cup Sevens has been hosted on the African continent.
