South Africa making waves at the Parliamentary Rugby World Cup

Yes, the Parliamentary Rugby World Cup is an actual thing and the team representing South Africa has proven to be far from pushovers.

Much like the actual tournament, beginning in Japan on Friday, the parliament version is also held every four years, and serves as the curtain raiser for the global spectacle event.

The 2019 edition kicked off in Yokohama on Friday, and features teams from the parliaments of South Africa, New Zealand, France, Wales, Scotland, England, Ireland, Argentina, Australia, and the host Japan.

Ngidi passes fit ahead of crucial Cricket World Cup clash

Lungi Ngidi has passed a fitness test and will be in the frame to make his return to the Proteas XI that will face New Zealand on Wednesday.

The Proteas have to win all their remaining games to have any hope of progressing to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals. They face an unbeaten New Zealand at Edgbaston in Birmingham before a meeting with Pakistan at Lord’s on Sunday in this week’s action.

Rassie the new Springbok coach

Rassie Erasmus will spearhead a streamlined but experienced Springbok management team until the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, SA Rugby confirmed on Wednesday, as the former Springbok captain will combine his Springbok coaching duties with his current role as Director of Rugby at SA Rugby.

The 45-year-old Erasmus takes over the national coaching duties from Allister Coetzee, who was in charge of the Boks during the past two years. His three assistant coaches will be Jacques Nienaber, Pieter de Villiers and Mzwandile Stick, while Aled Walters will join the management team as Head of Athletic Performance.

New Zealand space launch is first from a private site

An American company has launched a rocket into space from New Zealand, the first from a private launch facility.

Rocket Lab’s 17m (56ft) Electron rocket took off from the Mahia Peninsula, in North Island, the firm said on Twitter. The test flight was the first launch ever from New Zealand and is a major first step in an emerging market; launching cheap disposable rockets to carry small satellites and other cargo. The company plans to start frequent commercial launches later this year.
