African tech boffins gather in Lagos to shape the continent’s digital path

LAGOS – Last week 12 technology start-ups from across Africa were in Lagos, Nigeria, for the Google Launchpad Start-up Week, vying for attention from potential investors, and wise words from previous participants of the accelerator class.

Twitter CEO Wants To Move To Africa, Which Will “Define The Future”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey plans to move to Africa next year for three to six months, he said after a month-long trip to entrepreneurial hubs on the continent.

“Sad to be leaving the continent…for now,” Dorsey tweeted. “Africa will define the future (especially the bitcoin one!). Not sure where yet, but I’ll be living here for 3-6 months mid 2020. Grateful I was able to experience a small part.”

He has spent the month of November visiting entrepreneurs in Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Nedbank partners with Mara Phones for affordable mobile devices

Nedbank has partnered with Mara Phones to make locally-made Android smartphones available to its clients.

Mara Phones, a division of the Mara Corporation, recently launched the first African-based smartphone-manufacturing factory in Kigali. President Cyril Ramaphosa opened the second factory in Durban on 17 October 2019.

Each factory has a capacity to produce a few million smartphones units per year.

Red carpet for Botswana investors

Botswana has promised to roll out the red carpet for investors, urging them not to be discouraged by its small population from doing business in the country because decent returns are part of the package.

Speaking at the official opening of the 14th Global Expo Botswana in the capital city Gaborone this week, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said his country was making conditions conducive for investors.
